A Friday wedding. My first. It may have something to do with the fact that Saturday was September 11th or there may have been a discount for Friday weddings at all the venues (makes sense to me) or perhaps the tiny fact that Rachel & Nick wanted a long weekend to share with their families. Either way, Friday September 10, 2010 was a gorgeous day replete with sunshine, warm weather and an abundance of high spirited families who’ve known each other a long time.
Rachel and I first met a few years back when we started working on a musical at The Kennedy Center called NOBODY’S PERFECT. It turned out to be a wonderful show, but since I was the only guy in the cast, it wasn’t as if I was super close to any of the girls. Fast forward two years later and that little show made it’s way across the country on a National Tour via the Kennedy Center’s Family Theater program. I was still the only guy in the show, but now I was the only guy in the gigantic 14 passenger van. Yikes! Needless to say, we got to know each other, for better or worse and I would say my friendship with Rachel strengthened because of it. It may also be because of her inability to hold her bladder when laughing extremely hard. Not quite sure. Either way, from the land of touring and taking pictures at every venue to the world of Rachel’s wedding, it only seemed right that I would be there to photograph her special day as well. I am honored and proud to call her a friend. Congratulations Nick and Rachel! You have two lovely families who care deeply for you both and I know that you’ll have one of your own soon enough.![]()
Take Away: Every wedding I try to come up with some idea that I would steal for my own wedding. This might be the type of cake or programs or something of that nature. And the winner is: Rachel’s creativity. I’m not sure how I would necessarily bottle that up and take it to another wedding…it might be that I would have to hire her to be my wedding coordinator or design it…or something. Why do I say this? The details at this wedding were unbelievable. Spectacular is more accurate. My favorite was the guest book (in the slideshow). Instead of the typical guest book with pictures of the happy couple during their blossoming relationship or from a recent engagement session, Rachel and Nick decided to recycle some old window frames with the glass still intact. Add a couple sharpies and violå! It was awesome, it was recycled, it was rustic…it was great. Pair that up with the plantable/seeded place cards to the adorable flower girl baskets, it was a wedding decked out in the vast creativity of one Ms. Rachel Brennan. And after spending 5 months on the road with her, you’d think I had gotten to know her. Not true. Rachel, you’re extremely talented and one beautiful bride. Nick, you’re extremely lucky.![]()
